Free PDF Text Extractor
Pull the plain text out of a PDF's real text layer, entirely in your browser.
Drag and drop a PDF file, or click to choose one
How to use this tool
Upload a PDF, and its text is extracted page by page from the document's real text layer, not by scanning the page as an image.
Copy the result or download it as a plain .txt file. If the PDF was scanned from a physical document with no text layer, try an OCR tool instead.
FAQ
- Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
- No. Text extraction happens entirely in your browser. Your file is never uploaded anywhere.
- Why is the result empty for some PDFs?
- This tool reads the actual text layer embedded in the PDF. If the PDF is a scanned image with no text layer, there's nothing to extract — use an OCR tool instead to recognize text from the image.
- Does it preserve formatting?
- No. It extracts plain text page by page, with page breaks marked, but doesn't preserve fonts, columns, or layout.
- Does this work with password-protected PDFs?
- No. Encrypted PDFs can't be read in the browser. Remove the password first.
